With their origins going back over 200-years, the Britannia Coconut Dancers are world famous. Performing “folk dances” including their very own “Nut Dance” the men only group make for an amazing sight. The history of their blackened face is thought to have pagan or medieval connections whilst their costumes are linked to Moorish pirates. And so it was on a winters evening in January 2010 the Coconutters history was told to our fascinated Beaver Colony as part of their Global Challenge badge. Some volunteered to have their faces blackened and all joined in hand-clapping to a demonstration of one of the dances. Who knows when the boys in the Colony are 18, maybe they will join up and return in their costume to talk to future Beavers!
