On the weekend of the 20th to the 22nd of June Grey Pack and Red Troop, the Friday Sections, camped together at the Waddecar Scout Activity Centre near Preston.
We all packed ourselves into two minibuses leaving the Warren and an hour later trundled onto site to set up camp. Two hours later 10 Cubs, 15 Scouts, 3 Young leaders and 10 adult volunteers settled down to supper looking forward to an action-packed Saturday.
Each section had a separate programme up until late on the Saturday afternoon when they met up to go on a hike together, along with the Cubs and Scouts from the 40th Rossendale.
Activities for the Cubs included problem solving using the Norwegian Crane, the Climbing Wall, the Tomahawks and Air Rifles on their agenda.
The Scouts had Canoeing, Air Rifles and the Gladiator Challenge rope course. They even had time to squeeze in the 3-man catapults.
By early evening the hikers were back and some of the older Scouts had helped make tea for their arrival and everyone sat down together to enjoy the meal.
With it being the summer solstice it stayed light well into the night and torches were barely needed as we sat around the campfire toasting marshmallows and eating camp cake through to bed time.
Sunday brought drizzly weather but with the promise of a visit to the camp shop the Cubs and Scouts packed up their kit, struck the tents and dismantled the kitchen (after breakfast had been served) and got it all packed into the transport.
Off to the shop they went to spend their pennies and fill themselves with sweeties before the hour drive home, back to the Warren and the chaos, we mean orderly unloading of the kit and personal gear.
By the time parents and carers arrived we had managed to match people with gear, and we handed everyone back to their owners in high spirits even though many were beginning to flag after the weekend’s exertions.
Especially well done to the Cubs, whom for many, it was their first time in a tent, they coped very well and thank you to the Scouts who helped look after the Cubs.
As always, a big thank you to the adult volunteers and Young Leaders for giving up another weekend and putting so much hard work into making these events happen, no one person is an island, it really does take a team effort.
