On Saturday and Sunday, the 20th and 21st of September Cubs and Scouts from Grey Pack and Red Troop braved the dreadful wet weather to take part in a leadership training weekend at Bowley Scout Campsite.
All were either Sixers/Seconders or Patrol Leaders/Assistants and it was a chance for them to work together and learn from each other.
Upon arrival it was a bit of a race to get the tents and kitchen set up before the weather closed in, but they pulled together and got it done before the first of many heavy showers.
After this it was time for an early lunch, and the Scouts got it all arranged.
Then it was on to the first of the day’s tasks building cardboard canoes, from just sheets of cardboard and duct tape. They then attempted to paddle them across the Bowley pond with one getting within a hairs breadth of making it across and back sinking a mere foot from shore.
Then it was on to Raft Building which had it successes. Built from barrels pioneering poles and rope, they created two somewhat dodgy looking craft but being the stalwarts they are paddled around the pond.
After a shower it was teatime but with the rain torrenting down, many chose to get an early night.
There are exceptions to everything and despite the rain three brave souls hammocked out through the storm.
Next morning there was a strange big yellow ball in the sky which had been missing the previous day, and we were glad to see it back.
The Cubs and Scouts packed up their gear, took down their tents and it was off to do some orienteering.
After wandering around the site on the hunt for red and white squares we loaded ourselves up like pack horses and made the trip up to the Camp shop ready for home, some warmth and civilisation.
Thank you to the Cubs and Scouts for their impeccable behaviour through the weekend and even more thanks to the volunteers who made it possible despite the awful rain.
