It is with great sadness that we have to report that our Group President and Assistant Scout Leader, Jean Smith, died at 11:00am on Tuesday 5th August 2014.

Daughter of joint Group founder Frank Hartley, Jean was Group Scout Leader until November 2010 when she handed over the post to our current GSL Louise Cooper.  Jean took up the role of Assistant Scout Leader and the honorary title of Group President at that time.

Born in May 1949 Jean was associated with the 38th Rossendale for most of her life, attending regular meetings and camps with younger sister Anne under the watchful eye of their father from an early age.

Jean became an Assistant Cub Scout Leader for Friday Pack in July 1969 taking over the role of Akela in 1983 before she became the Group Scout Leader in 1997.  She was awarded the Silver Acorn from the Scout Association for “Specially Distinguished Service” in 2011.  She has just completed 45-years’ service to the Group.

She was only recently admitted to hospital where it was discovered she was suffering from cancer which was unfortunately too far gone to treat.

She leaves her husband Eddie, son Andrew, daughter Bev and granddaughters Chloe and Libby.  A third grandchild is due in October this year.

She will be missed by everyone in the Group.
