A video message from Bear Grylls – Chief Scout

St. Georges Day Parade

Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Explorer Scouts turned out in mass for the annual St. Georges Day Parade.  A short walk through the town centre of Rawtenstall was followed by a service at Longholme Methodist Church.

The members were inspired by a presentation from the “Rossendale Eight”, the eight young people from Rossendale who have been selected to represent the District at the World Scout Jamboree in Sweden in the Summer of 2011.

Group Auction

Full information on our forthcoming Family Auction Evening is now available in the Calendar Section of our WEB site.

Flash Bang Science

Budding Beaver Scientists were thrilled when the Flash Bang Science Mobile Laboratory visited their meeting recently.  “Science is Fun” was the theme of the visit.  Beavers were treated to a number of exciting experiments including Balloon Blow Up, Whoosh Bottle, Lilac Fire, Cabbage Magic and Elephants Toothpaste.

The visit will count towards the Beavers Experiment Badge award.

100 Club – April 2010

100club The winning number in our 6th 100 Club Draw was:

Hike for Haiti

Approximately a dozen families turned up on Easter Monday to take part in our “Hike for Haiti” fundraising event.  This was an idea of our Explorer Scouts.  The group of around 45 people representing families from all Sections enjoyed a walk taking in the Rossendale scenery raising money for the Haiti disaster appeal.
The walk started from our headquarters and took in the playing fields around Marl Pits sports centre, Myrtle Earth Farm, Far Height Side Woods (the muddy bit!), St. Peters Road, Dark Lane, Top Barn Lane and the Bridle Way alongside Bacup Road before returning to the HQ.

The two and a half mile walk took about an hour and a quarter to complete and whilst some of the adults and older children would have been able to walk further, it was far enough for some of the younger children.

On the return everyone enjoyed toasted Hot Cross Buns and drinks whilst the youngsters took part in an Easter Egg Hunt.

The event raised just over £60 for the Haiti appeal – thank you to all that attended.  A special thank you should be given to local “rambler” Walter Waide who worked with the Explorers in planning the route and led the walk on the day.

100club The winning number in our 5th 100 Club Draw was:

District Akela Trophy

Following on from the recent success of the Beaver Scout Section, a joint Cub Pack team recently won the District Akela Trophy competition.

This was held in ghastly weather but despite this 6 teams competed at bases for tracking, firelighting, first aid, pioneering, map and compass, tents, ingenuity and fun.

Congratulations to all involved.

Happy Birthday Brenda!

Congratulations Brenda on reaching a milestone birthday.

This was the suprise that was in store when Akela called into the Explorer Scout Section.  They had laid on a party for her with the help of Explorer Scout Leader & Husband Harry.

The other Section Leaders also worked hard on the preparation.

Brenda is an identical twin and although the other half knew about the party she came along also to join in with the celebration.

Role on the next fifty years!!
