District Beaver Scout Akeema Shield

Akeema Shield 2010

For the second year running, 10 young Beaver Scouts from the 38th worked hard to win the District Beaver Scout Akeema Shield competition.  Five other teams competed in this annual event our Colony winning by a very tight margin of just 3-points (236 to the nearest team on 233)!

Two rounds of activities were undertaken which included egg & spoon, sack race, box & broom, skipping, hockey relay and a memory game based around a twister mat.

The team then went on to represent Rossendale in the County competition two weeks later and came third.  Well done to all of them!

The Mystery of the Frank Hartley Shield

The Frank Hartley Shield The Frank Hartley Shield
Can you help us solve the mystery of the Frank Hartley shield?

Frank Hartley along with Ernie Bishop was the co-founder of our Group in 1951.  He was the father of our current Group Scout Leader.

The shield was presented to him by “The Seniors” at a time we believe he was the Scout Master.

It has been suggested it was presented to him by our first Queens Scouts, pictured below in 1956.  But do you know different?

If you think you know the answer use the contact form to let us have your version of the story.  Our GSL would be eternally grateful.

Family Campfire

Over 50 Family members from all Sections joined us for camp fire on a cold, but dry February evening.  Traditional camp fire songs were sung round the fire lead by a very enthusiastic Purple Pack Akela.  Inside a supper of hot dogs, jacket potatoes and hot drinks were available for purchase.  The event raised £95.00 towards Group funds.  Thank you to all that supported the event.

District Cub Football Competition

38th_Football_Team_2010 Our two Cub packs took part in the district football competition against 6 other teams competing from Cub packs in Rossendale.

Each 38th pack was in a different group for the heats, Grey pack not making it through to the semis.  Purple pack however won all their games in the heats (against 2nd, 5th and 21st Rossendale) then beat 43rd in the semi.

The final was a rematch against 2nd, who had beaten us in the final last year on penalties.  The final was an exciting game but at full time there was no score-so it was down to penalties again!!  Thanks to some good shooting and an excellent couple of saves from our goalkeeper the final score was 5:3 to the 38th.

A superb result after an excellent afternoon of football.

Well done to the cubs (and trainer Rama).
