For the second year running, 10 young Beaver Scouts from the 38th worked hard to win the District Beaver Scout Akeema Shield competition. Five other teams competed in this annual event our Colony winning by a very tight margin of just 3-points (236 to the nearest team on 233)!
Two rounds of activities were undertaken which included egg & spoon, sack race, box & broom, skipping, hockey relay and a memory game based around a twister mat.
The team then went on to represent Rossendale in the County competition two weeks later and came third. Well done to all of them!

| With their origins going back over 200-years, the Britannia Coconut Dancers are world famous. Performing “folk dances” including their very own “Nut Dance” the men only group make for an amazing sight.
The history of their blackened face is thought to have pagan or medieval connections whilst their costumes are linked to Moorish pirates. And so it was on a winters evening in January 2010 the Coconutters history was told to our fascinated Beaver Colony as part of their Global Challenge badge. Some volunteered to have their faces blackened and all joined in hand-clapping to a demonstration of one of the dances. Who knows when the boys in the Colony are 18, maybe they will join up and return in their costume to talk to future Beavers! 2009 was rounded off for the Beaver Section with a fun event at Ski Rossendale. 25 of our Beavers joined around 100 more Beavers from around the Rossendale District. The Beavers snow tubed, sledged and tobogganed on the nursery ski slope on a cold but dry night. The highlight for most was the visit by Santa, but only after they sang Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer at the top of their voices. All the Beavers received a present before being sent home after a very enjoyable evening.

Our Beaver Scout Colony recently held a Scouts Own Service for their families. Five weeks of preperation went into the evening but the Beavers were awarded with the presentation of their Faith Badge and Promise Challenge Badge. The evening started with a prayer followed by a hymn sung by the children. The Colony then split into two Groups then performing the parable of the feeding of the 4000 and the other a moral based around the story of Barney the Beaver Scout. The Assistant District Commissioner for Rossendale Beaver Scouts then presented some of the hard working Beavers with their Chief Scout Bronze Awards.

Eight members of our Beaver Colony took part in the Rossendale District Curling Competition. Eight teams from across the Borough battled to win the trophy and represent Rossendale at the County competition. The eventual winners after seven rounds were the 5th Rossendale. Our Beavers came a very respectable third place. Well done to all that took part!

The Beavers have recently been working on their Friendship Challenge and made special friends with 9-year old Guide Dog Glennie.
Her owner brought her along to the colony meeting and explained about how the dog and her are trained by the Guide Dog for the Blind Association.
The Beavers had lots of questions to ask and Glennie took it all in her stride!
